DigiTank

Project duration: Jan 2025 bis Dec 2028

What's it about?

Tank terminals keep Europe's energy moving – but they come with real risks, to the environment and to the people who run them. DigiTank meets these challenges head-on with smart technology. We build a digital twin to map every facility virtually and monitor it in real time. We deploy drones and robots for inspections. The result: safer operations, stronger environmental protection, and real relief for our teams on the ground.

Motivation

Tank terminals are a backbone of Germany's energy and industrial infrastructure. Their location near water makes environmental protection non-negotiable. Despite strong safety measures, accidents involving water-polluting substances still happen every year – in 2022 alone, around 6.3 million litres were released. Add to that the physical and psychological toll on staff, who often work shifts in tough weather conditions. DigiTank tackles this head-on: targeted digitalisation and automation, with safety, environmental protection, and employee wellbeing at the core.

Goals

We're building a digital, future-ready model for terminal operations. At the heart of it: a digital twin, a human-centred control centre, and mobile monitoring units like drones and robots. AI-supported analysis makes our processes more efficient, safer, and cleaner. And we don't stop at technology – a dedicated training and engagement concept builds acceptance among our people and helps us tackle the skills shortage for the long term.

Project Approach

We take a holistic, interdisciplinary approach – bringing together technical, psychological, and economic expertise. Key measures Baseline analysis – We assess the technical, economic, and psychological starting point of every terminal. Digital capture of infrastructure and processes – Sensors, cameras, and drones build our digital twin and power real-time monitoring and control. AI-supported control centre – Designed around our people, to ease the load and support smarter decisions. Mobile monitoring units – Drones and robots step in fast when safety-critical situations arise. Training concept – Hands-on programmes that build confidence and drive safe adoption of new technology.
